Synthetic turf fibres are an important component of a synthetic turf surface; they provide its look and feel and are mainly responsible for performance characteristics like ball roll and low sliding resistance. The quality of turf fibres is therefore essential for a quality surface. Technical details such as microns, dtex, shape, colour or polymer grade do not in themselves determine the overall quality of the fibres. The ability to design optimal turf fibres in combination with matching advanced extrusion technology is what determines their quality.

Monofilament turf yarns are extruded through a spinneret with the cross-section of the fibre determined by the die hole of the spinneret. The design of the yarn is essential for the performance characteristics of the synthetic turf surface. TenCate monofilament products include TenCate Monoslide™ and TenCate Oasis®.

Tape yarn is produced by film extrusion. In this process the film is slotted into tape, which is fibrillated with a specific pattern. The fibrillation provides the individual turf fibres with a natural look and feel after installation on a synthetic turf pitch. TenCate Grass fibrillated tape products are named TenCate Tapeslide®.

TenCate Grass manufactures and supplies primary backing material for synthetic turf systems that provides strength, dimensional stability and tuft-lock within the system.

Primary backing not only plays an important role after the synthetic turf is installed but the use of a high-quality backing during the production and installation of synthetic turf surfaces also provides many distinct advantages. TenCate Grass Backing solutions are easy to use, prevent creasing or tension differences and guarantee optimum control during manufacturing and installation. Dimensional stability and an absence of distortion are especially important features of TenCate Grass Backing products.

The choice of the right backing in an application is about balancing needs. For example, the backing of a monofilament-based American football field has different requirements from a hockey pitch made from fibrillated tape.

TenCate Grass tests newly developed components in-house using a variety of testing methods. These tests can range from the composition and specifications of turf fibres to long-term weathering performance. Furthermore, the performance of the components can be tested through turf construction testing and performance testing of the system.


A synthetic turf field can provide the same capacity as several natural grass fields as synthetic turf will tolerate much more intensive use than natural turf, allowing the same pitch to be used regularly for matches and training. Another reason why some clubs opt for synthetic turf is that matches and training sessions can be played in all weather conditions as far as possible. Some other aspects of a synthetic field are:

The overall performance of the field or the aesthetic of a landscaped area will decline if it does not receive proper maintenance. Yes, systems are created specifically to meet the requirements of the facility and this will often depend on the application the field will be used for and the level of accreditation needed, if any. For example, FIFA uses FIFA QUALITY and FIFA QUALITY PRO standards for football fields; ITF allocates tennis courts into different categories based on speed; and the FIH has 4 categories to determine the usage and standard of a hockey pitch.

The durability of a synthetic turf system depends on the number of hours of play, the installation and design of the synthetic turf system and how well the field has been maintained. An estimate of the durability of a synthetic turf system is approximately five to seven years.
