Testing and analysing stand-alone components of a synthetic turf system provides information on its quality and specifications. However, it does not give the full picture on its performance when used in an artificial grass surface. Here, the interaction of the different components, the tuft settings, and installation and maintenance are also important parameters to ensuring a quality surface.

The method used to get an indication of the durability of turf fibres used in a specific turf construction is the Lisport or Lisport XL test. These Lisport tests give a visual indication of how a synthetic turf system will age over time as a result of usage on the surface. The results of a Lisport test are very useful when comparing different types of components or tuft settings and provide an indication of the durability of the synthetic turf system.

A Lisport test sees two studded cylinders rolled over a piece of artificial grass for a pre-set number of cycles. The number of cycles simulates a period of activity on the surface, as the studded roller simulates a football boot.
