A first for Minor League Baseball at Hillsboro Hops Ballpark

For the first time in the United States, a Minor League Baseball field has been completed with Pivot® performance turf, known in other regions as Pure PT. The new playing surface at the Hillsboro Hops Ballpark marks a meaningful step in how professional baseball fields can be designed for consistent play, player safety, and long term use.

What this means for Minor League Baseball

Minor League Baseball fields are used intensively. Games, daily training, community events, and year round access place constant demands on the playing surface. Consistency, durability, and player safety are not optional. They directly influence player development and the reliability of the field over time.

As facilities are expected to do more with fewer interruptions, surface behavior becomes part of the competitive and operational equation.

A new surface at Hillsboro

The installation of the playing surface at the new ballpark in Hillsboro, Oregon has been completed. The project has reached an important milestone as the stadium moves toward its planned completion at the end of December 2025.

This installation represents the first use of Pivot® performance turf on a Minor League Baseball field in the United States, setting a reference point for future projects within the league.

Designed to behave like natural grass

Pivot® performance turf is designed without PFAS and without performance infill. Instead of relying on loose materials for stability and impact control, the system uses fiber structure to manage grip, cushioning, and energy absorption.

For players, this results in predictable movement, stable footing, and controlled response without excess rebound. These characteristics are based on extensive player testing and on field validation under real playing conditions.

Supporting long term player development

For the Hillsboro Hops, the choice for this surface aligns with the broader ambition behind the new ballpark. According to President and General Manager K.L. Wombacher, the goal is to provide a facility that supports player development while delivering consistent performance season after season.

A stable and reliable surface reduces variability and allows players to focus on performance rather than adaptation.

Operational and environmental considerations

Beyond playability, the system addresses practical challenges faced by professional sports facilities. The absence of infill simplifies maintenance and reduces microplastic dispersion. The lower system weight limits transport during installation, and water use during operation is eliminated.

At the end of its service life, the turf is designed to be easier to recover and recycle than traditional systems, supporting more responsible end of life handling without adding complexity to day to day operations.
