Indoor and Outdoor Football Come Together at ISB in Beijing

Beijing is home to another significant Pure PT™ project for international school sport. Following the recently completed field at Beijing City International School, Pure PT™ has now also been installed at the International School of Beijing in Shunyi. Two schools in the same city, but with very different campuses and sporting needs.

At ISB, the scale and variety of the sports facilities stand out. Football is played across large outdoor fields, inside an air dome and in a smaller indoor setting. Pure PT™ is now installed across all three, covering 16,258 m² across three distinct playing environments. The project was delivered in partnership with Beijing Borun Sport.

A campus built around sport

Founded in 1980, the International School of Beijing has a long history of international education in the city. Sport is an important part of school life, with students participating in football, rugby, athletics, basketball, volleyball, baseball, swimming, tennis and other activities.nThe campus reflects that. Its facilities include outdoor football fields, a 665 seat sports stadium, two purpose built sports domes, four gyms and an aquatic centre. The Pure PT™ installation alone includes 14,800 m² of outdoor football turf, 1,316 m² inside an air dome and 142 m² in an indoor football area.

This makes ISB a very different project from the nearby BCIS installation. At BCIS, limited urban space makes every available playing hour valuable. At ISB, the interesting question is different: how can the same turf approach support football across outdoor and indoor environments with very different conditions?

Performance had to be proven

FIFA Quality certification was a mandatory requirement for the outdoor football fields. During the tender, this became a key point of discussion: could an infill free system meet the required FIFA performance criteria? The answer had to come from the field itself. Following installation by Beijing Borun Sport, the 14,800 m² outdoor Pure PT™ football surface achieved FIFA Quality certification without infill and without a shockpad. For ISB, this confirmed that the installed system met the performance requirement that had been central to the project from the start.

From outdoors to indoors

What sets the ISB project apart is the combination of outdoor and indoor football within one campus. The largest part of the installation is outdoors, with 14,800 m² of Pure PT™ football turf. Inside the school’s air dome, another 1,316 m² has been installed, complemented by a 142 m² indoor football area. Together, this brings Pure PT™ to 16,258 m² at ISB, supporting students wherever football is played on campus, from the main outdoor fields to the indoor facilities.

Across these areas, the system is used without infill. This means there is no infill to migrate or redistribute between playing areas, while routine maintenance remains part of keeping each surface ready for use. Together with the recent BCIS project, it also shows something broader. Two international schools in the same city can face very different questions about their sports facilities.

At BCIS, the challenge is making more of limited urban space. At ISB, it is supporting football across multiple indoor and outdoor environments.

Same city. Different sporting needs. Different applications of Pure PT™.
